Согласно Гиппократу, физическое и душевное здоровье обеспечивается равновесием так называемых четырех влаг или телесных жидкостей: крови, флегмы, черной желчи и желтой желчи. От соотношения этих жидкостей зависит темперамент: в частности, преобладание крови над остальными «соками» проявляется румянцем и «сангвинической» живостью, а также вспыльчивостью, тогда как преобладание черной желчи дает бледность и меланхолию. Гармония жидкостей (эукразия) означает здоровье, нарушение же равновесия (дискразия) ведет к болезни. И хотя гуморальная теория Гиппократа давно опровергнута, продержалась она не так уж и мало – 2000 лет, до начала XVIII в., оставив нам в наследство такие эпитеты, как «флегматичный» или «желчный», а также биомедицинский подход к проблемам тревожности и психических заболеваний в целом.
