И вот сие гнусное воинство, более дикое, нежели любая орда язычников, не почитающее ни Бога, ни человека, разорило всю область и убивало всех без разбора, обоего пола, всякого возраста и состояния, уничтожая, грабя и сжигая поместья, церкви и дома простого народа. Аилред из РивоВойдя, мы увидели старуху, варившую в котелке козлятину. У нее пятеро детей, из которых еще ни один не отделился. Старший, мальчик тринадцати лет, вместе с ее мужем, которому восемьдесят, ушел валить деревья в лес. Два других сына отправились в Инвернесс покупать еду, то бишь овсяную муку. Мясо она считала дорогим удовольствием и сказала, что по весне, когда козы приносят приплод и дают молоко, дети вполне могут обойтись без мяса. Она владела шестью козами, а в пристройке рядом с домом я видел множество козлят. Также она разводит домашнюю птицу. У озера мы увидели огород с картофелем и участок земли, на котором лежали четыре доски с двенадцатью снопами ячменя. Все в доме сделано собственными руками, а если что нужно купить, это выменивается на рынке на козлят и цыплят.
