“Now, Barbecue, tip us a stave (эй, Окорок, затяни-ка песню; to tip — давать /на чай/, сваливать; stave — палка; стих, строфа),” cried one voice (крикнул один голос).
“The old one (старую),” cried another (крикнул другой).
bustle [bAsl] stowed [stqud] voyage [`vOIIG] weary [`wIqrI] whistle [wIsl] lantern [`lxntqn]
ALL that night we were in a great bustle getting things stowed in their place, and boatfuls of the squire’s friends, Mr. Blandly and the like, coming off to wish him a good voyage and a safe return. We never had a night at the “Admiral Benbow” when I had half the work; and I was dog-tired when a little before dawn, the boatswain sounded his pipe, and the crew began to man the capstan-bars. I might have been twice as weary, yet I would not have left the deck; all was so new and interesting to me — the brief commands, the shrill not of the whistle, the men bustling to their places in the glimmer of the ship’s lanterns.
“Now, Barbecue, tip us a stave,” cried one voice.
“The old one,” cried another.
“Ay, ay, mates (есть, ребята),” said Long John, who was standing by with his crutch under his arm (сказал Долговязый Джон, стоявший рядом с костылем под мышкой), and at once broke out in the air and words I knew so well (и сразу же запел /песню/ под открытым небом, слова /которой/ я знал так хорошо; to break out — разразиться, вспыхнуть, грянуть) —
“Fifteen men on the dead man’s chest — (пятнадцать человек на сундук мертвеца…)”
And then the whole crew bore chorus (и затем вся команда подхватывала хором; to bear — произвести, нести, поддержать; chorus — хор, припев): —
“You — ho — ho, and a bottle of rum (йо-хо-хо, и бутылка рому)!”
And at the third “ho!” drove the bars before them with a will (и при третьем «хо» /матросы/ нажали на брусья лебедки энергично; to drive — приводить в действие, гнать; will — воля, желание, энтузиазм). Even at that exciting moment it carried me back to the old “Admiral Benbow” in a second (даже в этот захватывающий момент мне вмиг припомнился старый «Адмирал Бенбоу»; to carry back — возвращать /в прошлое/, напоминать); and I seemed to hear the voice of the captain piping in the chorus (мне показалось, что я слышу голос /покойного/ капитана, подпевающего в хоре; to pipe — свистеть; петь, пронзительно говорить).

But soon the anchor was short up (но вскоре якорь был коротко = полностью поднят); soon it was hanging dripping at the bows (/вскоре он/ был укреплен на носу корабля, с него капала вода; dripping — капающий, стекающий каплями, мокрый); soon the sails began to draw (паруса начали раздуваться; to draw — тащить; натягивать), and the land and shipping to flit by on either side (а земля и суда — /стремительно/ удаляться от нас с обеих сторон; to flit — порхать, мелькать); and before I could lie down to snatch an hour of slumber (и прежде чем я мог прилечь, чтобы урвать часок сна = хоть немного подремать) the Hispaniola had begun her voyage to the Isle of Treasure (Испаньола начала свое плавание к Острову Сокровищ).
I am not going to relate that voyage in detail (я не собираюсь описывать это плавание в деталях; to relate — рассказывать, затрагивать). It was fairly prosperous (оно было очень удачным; fairly — фактически, совершенно; prosperous — процветающий, удачный, попутный /ветер/; to prosper — благоденствовать, преуспевать, процветать; благоприятствовать, подходить). The ship proved to be a good ship (корабль оказался хорошим судном), the crew were capable seamen (экипаж состоял из опытных моряков; capable — способный), and the captain thoroughly understood his business (капитан превосходно знал свое дело). But before we came the length of Treasure Island (но прежде, чем мы достигли длины = берега Острова Сокровищ), two or three things had happened which require to be known (две-три вещи произошло, которые требуют того, чтобы быть известными = о которых стоит упомянуть).

Mr. Arrow, first of all, turned out even worse than the captain had feared (мистер Эрроу, прежде всего, оказался даже хуже, чем капитан опасался = думал о нем). He had no command among the men (он не имел руководства среди матросов = не пользовался авторитетом), and people did what they pleased with him (и люди делали при нем, что хотели; to please — нравиться, хотеть, изволить). But that was by no means the worst of it (но это было далеко не самым худшим); for after a day or two at sea he began to appear on deck with hazy eye (так как через день-два в море = после того, как мы отчалили, он стал появляться на палубе с мутным взглядом), red cheeks, stuttering tongue (красными щеками, заплетающимся языком), and other marks of drunkenness (и другими признаками опьянения; drunken — пьяный). Time after time he was ordered below in disgrace (раз за разом его гнали вниз = в каюту с позором; time after time — не раз, постоянно; disgrace — позор, бесчестье). Sometimes he fell and cut himself (иногда он падал и расшибался; to cut — резать); sometimes he lay all day long in his little bunk at one side of the companion (иногда он лежал весь день напролет в своей маленькой койке в углу: «на одной стороне» каюты); sometimes for a day or two he would be almost sober and attend to his work at least passably (порой день или два он был почти трезвым и выполнял свои обязанности по крайней мере сносно; to attend — уделять внимание, заботиться о; выполнять).

In the meantime (тем временем), we could never make out where he got the drink (мы никогда = никак не могли понять, где он берет выпивку). That was the ship’s mystery (это была тайна корабля = весь корабль ломал над этим голову). Watch him as we pleased (как ни следили мы за ним), we could do nothing to solve it (но ничего не узнали: «могли сделать ничего, чтобы решить эту /проблему/»); and when we asked him to his face (когда спрашивали его напрямик: «в лицо»), he would only laugh, if he were drunk (он лишь смеялся, если был пьян), and if he were sober, deny solemnly that he ever tasted anything but water (а если был трезвым, то отрицал торжественно = божился, что никогда не пил ничего, кроме воды; to taste — пробовать, отведывать).
